Electives will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 1:00-2:00pm.
Music - Ukelele
Everything you ever wanted to know about playing the ukulele (the fun gateway to guitar). Learn to play melodies and chords, read music and tab, survey different styles, perform. Whole class will lead a folksong sing-a-long with the school at the end of the trimester.
Art - Drawing/Painting
Middle School Elective students will explore beginning techniques of drawing and painting. Materials will include pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, permanent marker, watercolor, liquid watercolor and acrylic paint on specialty watercolor paper, bristol board, pine wood pieces and canvas board.
Technology - Digital Media
In Digital Media this year we will be working on our laptops. We will be using different cameras, video cameras, and computer programs to learn what medium is needed for different types of projects. We will be creating commercials, trailers, news broadcasts, and mini movies. This course introduces students to the basic principles and applications of digital photography and movie making, as a medium, a skill-set, and an integral part of today’s digital world. We start each technology class with my personal favorite, the music video parody project.
Music - "Seussical"
A class for exuberant people. "Seussical" is filled with singing, dancing and many fun characters. Students must want to perform.
Art - "Seussical"
In this elective the art, technology and music students will collaborate on a play production. In the art component, the students will conduct research with laptop computers on the chosen play, work together to make accessories for the play (such as masks, props and backdrops) for the performance. Teamwork and group participation is key to this elective.
Technology - Desktop Publishing
Desktop publishing is the creation of documents using software that enables you to create quality documents with graphics and style that are worthy of publishing. The term implies a more professional-looking end result, with a more complex layout, than word processing. In this class students will learn the tools and tricks to create numerous projects with style and ease. We will be starting with Microsoft Word and moving on to newer programs as the trimester goes on. This course will focus on creating work worthy of publishing and becoming comfortable with the more complex aspects of familiar programs. It is my hope that we will create school newsletters, posters, business cards, menus, greeting cards, and a variety of different advertisements and programs help promote the school's play.
Music - Percussion
Exploring percussive expression through different styles; body percussion, buckets, Afro-Cuban drumming and maybe a few new surprises.
Art - Ceramics/Sculpture
Ceramics/sculpture elective students will create unique hand built ceramic sculptures and learn about the basic process and correct terms of creating art with clay. The sculpture component of the elective will include working with wood, plaster, wire, and found objects to create fantastic one of a kind sculptures.
Technology - Website Design and Coding Instruction
The class will be an introduction to the design, creation, and maintenance of web pages and websites. Students will learn how to critically evaluate website quality. They will work together and on their own to create and maintain high quality web pages, and learn about web design standards and why they're important. We will be using a multitude of strategies, mediums, tools, and techniques to create these websites in a supportive and creative environment. This year we are excited to include coding once again into the creation of our sites.
